Your data is very important and it can disappear in an instant through a hard reset, or even leaving your pda till it's batteries run dry. Palm's NVFS (Non Volatile Flash System) retains data even if your battery is flat, but will not protect against a hard reset.
You can backup your contacts and notes when you hotsync/activesync your device with your computer. However if you want to restore everything completely, you need to backup using software like Backup Manager or Backup Buddy. This allows you to restore your PDA completely from your memory card, even if you are on call.
