Only 14 Deaths : National Service

Photo Credit : NST - Too Hui Min died on Wednesday night from a colon infection.

I read this from the New Straits Times with disgust :

National Service Training Department director-general Datuk Abdul Hadi Awang Kecil reiterated that the training programme will not be scrapped "just because of one or two deaths (this year)".

There has been 14 deaths in the 4 years of National Service 3 month Boot Camp. Thats at least 4 deaths a year or 2 deaths per 3 month session. That sounds like a statistic but would you send your child knowing that death awaits only 2 in 100,000. If you knew the stakes would you gamble your child's life away in his/her prime? This is just unacceptable.

Yeah, all of us are reluctant to send our kids to the NS. But is there an option given by the govt to us, on whether we choose to or not to send our kids to the National Service?

spinosum,
if that stupid program is still around by the time my kid becomes eligible, I would elect to go the way of a conscientious objector, and fight it out in the courts. Attending colleges overseas is just avoiding the issue.
