Pterygium of the Eye

Pterygium of the Eye

This is quite common in our tropical climate. Constant expoosure to thesun, wind and dust causes irritation to the sclera (whites of the eye) and a layer of tissue grows and encroaches on the cornea. Prevention is better than cure so get a good pair of sunglasses and if you ride a motorbike, best get a good visor. Once it covers a significant part of the cornea, it can be removed surgically.
