The Food and Drug Administration on Friday issued a statement warning consumers to avoid using toothpaste labeled as made in China because the agency had detected high levels of a poisonous chemical known as diethylene glycol or DEG in samples from a few shipments.

In the meantime, the FDA issued an import alert to prevent toothpaste tainted with DEG from entering the Unites States.

In addition to being named diethylene glycol, the chemical can also be called diglycol or diglycol stearate, which may confuse some consumers.

According to the FDA, the brands of toothpaste from China that have been found containing DEG and are included in the import alert are Cooldent Fluoride; Cooldent Spearmint; Cooldent ICE; Dr. Cool, Everfresh Toothpaste; Superdent Toothpaste; Clean Rite Toothpaste; Oralmax Extreme; Oral Bright Fresh Spearmint Flavor; Bright Max Peppermint Flavor; ShiR Fresh Mint Fluoride Paste; DentaPro; DentaKleen; and DentaKleen Junior.
