Beware of Water Scooters

The Star reported today that an Aussie tourist was killed in a water scooter collision yesterday. My condolences to the family of the victim. Sadly in Penang these water scooters are easily available in the tourist spots. Most of the time those riding them are untrained, cannot swim and can be quite reckless. I guess they think it isn't dangerous but it definitely is.
Just last week when I was fishing, I saw a water scooter drive like a mad person, even falling over once when turning too fast. Then the person started running rings around a poor kayaker causing waves that nearly toppled it. All this just to show off their "skills". Not long ago, a well know person also died when his water scooter overturned. He was a champion swimmer but that didn't matter because he had a concussion when the scooter hit his head.
So I hope there will be better control, or even a ban on illegal water scooters. It's not worth the risk.
