GG Telecom's GG03 Bluetooth Headset PhotoReview

Bluetooth Headsets have become a common sight out there now, but the GG03 from GG Telecom is pretty special and stands out from the rest. In the world's biggest Consumer and Electrical Show (CES), the GG03 won the innovation awards 2004 and 2005 in the Bluetooth Wireless communication Category in Asia. It also won the Computex Taipei "Best Buyer Choice" award. No other bluetooth headset can make that claim, so there must be something good about it. The other special features are :

1. The GG03 is a Bluetooth Version 1.2 device that enhances the capability of resisting interference and increases data transfer rate.

2. The Gg03 is capable of pairing up to 3 Bluetooth devices. Switch between different devices by simply pressing the multi-function key. For example, connect to your phone by pressing the multi-function button once, press it 2 times to connect to your computer and press it 3 times to connect to your laptop.

3.Sometimes when you connect your headset to your pda/phone, the connection stays on long after you stop using it, thus draining the batteries. The GG03 allows you to manually disconnect the link by pressing the middle and volume - button together. This improves the battery life greatly for both phone and headset.

I just bought the GG03 3 days ago and was previously using the Bluetrek G2, G2 Plus, Step 1150, HBH-60 and the Nokia HDW-30...hmm come to think of it, they all have funny names! I wanted to share this short photoreview as a picture is worth a thousand words and there aren't many real photos of the GG03 out there.

Firstly the GG03 is really cute with it's sleek black and blue lines. There are 3 blue LEDs that blink blue, red and purple depending on the current status of the headset. When on standby, it blinks every 5 seconds or so.

Here is the GG03 when it's not blinking. To mute a call just press the volume + and - button together. To transfer the call from headset to phone, press the middle and volume - button once. To connect from phone to headset, press the middle multi-function button once.

And the GG03 with the Blue LED Blinking. Pairing the headset is easy. Just press and hold the volume + middle button for 3 seconds and the LED lights blink blue and red indicating a paring mode. The pairing code for the GG03 is fixed at 1234.

The button design and layout is simple and effective. Answering or ending a call just requires a quick press on the middle button. Switching it on or off will need a longer press on the power button. The volume up and down button is easily accesible.

From the side it looks very sleek and cute. The black and blue colours go very while together. Once again, the multi function button is easily accesible.

The front view reveals the microphone at the tip and the soft earpiece which directs the sound into your ear canal. The microphone quality is very good and there is no problem for the other party to hear your voice. Voice commands work very well and I have noticed an improvement in the accuracy of voice commands with the GG03.

Another side view of the simple curves of the GG03.

The soft earpiece cover can be removed or adjusted in position to suit your ear. Sound quality is good but slightly lacking in bass. The back of the GG03 is a smooth black moulded plastic. The black plastic has a high quality rubberised feel to it.

A simple round charging port is located at the back of the GG03. There is a small hole for the lanyard attachment.

The charger is an interesting USB cable which can be attached to the power adapter or your computer. This is very versatile as you can get a usb car charger adapter and use it to recharge the GG03.

The USB port on the Wall Charger Adaptor.

The Gg03's newly designed flexible USB charging cable that lets you twist and bend it into any shape you like. The USB cable has a metal shell that can be moulded in any direction.

The charger plugs into the back and 3 red LEDs show that it is charging. The red lights turn off when it is fully charged. For the first charge, you should charge it continuously for 4 hours to condition the battery. After that a full recharge cycle only takes about 1-2 hours. So far with moderate use, I have not had to recharge for 3 days. It's battery rating is 180 hours of Stand-By Time and a Talk Time of 6.5hours by it's 100mAh, Li-Polymer battery.

Everybody has different shaped ears and some may be more comfortable with a ear-hook. The GG03 comes with a detachable ear hook that can be positioned for left or right ear use.

The ear hook is easily attached to the GG03 and is very stable and light.

It is comfortable and unobtrusive and fits well even if you have spectacles on.

The GG03 can be used without the ear hook, but it really depends on the shape of your ear. On some ears, it may be more stable with the ear hook attached. I personally use mine without the ear hook as it is easier to put on that way.

There is a nice black lanyard provided with the GG03.

It attaches to the back of the headset and can be detached easily from the lanyard.

I personally use my GG03 with the lanyard attached as it can be easily carried around your neck and quickly put on when you receive a call.

A comparison of the GG03 and Bluetrek G2 Plus size shows that it is really small.

The dimensions of the GG03 are 52 x 26 x 28mm and it weighs only 13 grams.

As you can see it is much shorter than the Bluetrek G2 Plus, but the voice quality does not suffer at all. All in all the GG03 is much smaller and cuter!

With all that in mind, the GG03 is one of the best bluetooth headsets I have used and certainly the best looking one so far. It works well with my Motorola MPX and my laptop (I use it for Skyping!) and the audio and microphone quality is excellent.

What Doc Likes :
- Small
- Excellent Button Design
- Good Value for money (cheap!)
- Good microphone and audio quality
- Pairs and Connects to 3 Bluetooth Devices
- Good battery life

What Doc Doesn't Like :
- The earpiece may not fit everyone comfortably without the earhook.
- Nothing else!

For further enquiries about pricing and bulk buys you can contact me as I am trying to arrange a bulk buy.

Update on Prices :

The GG03a is retailing her in Malaysia for RM$268 (1USD=3.8RM). If there is a bulk buy of 10 units, the price will come down to RM$208.

    Hi Doc,

I'm definately interested doc! Roughly wat r the cost of this little gizmo?

I was of the impression most BT headset cant be used for mp3 playback...any idea whether it'll work with O2 Xphone 2?

Hi Sam, to listen to MP3's your device must support the bluetooth headset profile. I'm not sure if the Xphone 2 does.
Regarding pricing, it is currently retailing in Malaysia for $268 ringgit (1 USD = 3.8 ringgit). But if we can get a bulk buy of about 10 units, the price will be about RM$190-200.

Very nice and concise review doc!

I have been scouting around, but didn't find it for sale at various mobile phone stores.

Anyway, I read in the GG03's thread at MPC that there is a 3 second delay when answering calls. Is that really evident? Or can it be ignored? Just wanted to get a 2nd opinion.

    Cheers.

Hi Sonyclie, you won't find it around because it has not been officially launched in Malaysia. About the 3 second delay, I can happily tell you that this is almost non-existent with the GG03. I had this problem with the Bluetrek G2 plus with my XDA Mini and Moto MPX, but the response from the GGo3 is very fast. Perhaps it's the Bluetooth 1.2 version that is faster.

But the best is to try it out for yourself and see.

    Hi Doc,

I read on O2 FAQ the phone support both headset & handsfree profile, is that what you mean?

At 12:18 PM, Blogger Doc said...

Hmm may not be, it has to be the bluetooth audio profile, best to test and see first. Works with my MPX but I don't know for the Xphone. The XDA mini doesn't have the audio profile!

Icic, I get you doc...If mini dont have it, highly unlikely Xphone will have it...

I might have to go for something like this http://www.mobiletechreview.com/tips/Bluetake_i_Phono.htm

The Bluetake still may not work, it's not the headset problem but the phone/pda problem that doesn't support the audio profile.

Good day Doc, great review. Very helpful indeed. I didn't even see a real unit b4 buying it, but I read your review, and that gave me total satisfication, no regret. Just bought it from lelong.com.my at RM199. I like it so much. But the car charger doesn't work quite well. I wonder if that's under warranty too.

Doc, I'm a doc too, and I like gadgets like you do. I spent at least a quarter of my monthly pay to buy gadgets. But I don't even have my own direct opthalmoscope. I'm still using my old Litmann stethoscope. Not listening murmur for quite sometime already. Probably stethoscope dysfunction. LOL. The world should integrates. What about a termometer-cum-mp3player? And bluetooth-stethoscope? And PDA-casenotes?

Doc, I hope you don't mind that I give you a comment here. Your review is good and reliable, that's for sure. Nevertheless, I think you need a better camera or a macrophotography course. That will make you a perfect reviewer.

    Regards.

Thanks Jeiss, yes next on my list is a better macro camera. A bit broke at the moment so I just have to make do!

Hi DokAbet, yes you can listen to mp3 on the GG03, but the quality of the sound isn't very good.
I listen to Mp3 and movies on my MPX via the GG03.

Can you disable the flashing light when the headset is in use?

At 11:12 PM, Blogger Doc said...

No you cannot disable the blue flashing light. It's actually quite useful as it flashes differently if it's connected or in stand by or if the battery is low.

Great article you got here. I'd like to read more about that topic. The only thing it would also be great to see on this blog is a few pics of some gizmos.
