New Sharps Bin

New Sharps Bin

The sharps bin here in Geelong hospital has a pretty good design. The opening is flat and large which makes it easy to throw the sharps in.

Please don't 'throw' sharps into the bin, but instead place them in carefully.

Resaerch in progress using visual examination and a forensic detection test for the identification of latent blood stains shows widespread extensive bloodstaining on all surfaces of sharps bins and around the wider area in which the stand.

Other studies show a high rate of sharps injury among ancillary and support staff, and waste handlers in the disposal sector, associated mainly with protruberant sharps from overfilled bins, or by the disposal of unsheathed needles into thin-walled plastic sacks intended only for soft wastes.

Throwing sharps turnes them into a dangerous missile. Blood splashes will be extensive

...... and who might bother to stoop to retrieve that one which missed the bin and ended up on the floor?
