From the Star Online :
"More and more medical students sent abroad to study on government scholarships, many costing more than a million ringgit each, are breaking their 10-year bond by refusing to return and serve in public hospitals.
“This is a sore point with us. In 2006, 21 medical students in Britain did not return. Last year, the number was 63. For those studying in Ireland, three students did not come back in 2006 while last year, 27 did not return,” said Human Capital Development division director Datin Madinah Mohamad.
She said these students cost the Government up to RM1.1mil each in funding for the five-year course."
For undergrad scholarship students I think they should come back to serve their term. I have served mine proundly, but it definitely is not good for financial security. Look as a HO in the UK, they earn about 2000 pounds a month, which is at least 15,ooo ringgit here. Here you earn about 300 pounds a month and work like hell. Ok of course the living expenses there are much higher, but inflation is also setting in here.
But money should not be your objective in medicine. If you want money, go be a businessman, or take that 1 million ringgit and go invest it. At the end of 5 years you would have made more money that you will working for another 5 years for the government.
