Hot Debate on JPA Scholarship Doctors
Wow... reading a hot debate about JPA scholars not wanting to come back after their medical degrees in the UK. You can read about it here in Lim Kit Siang's Blog.
Basically the med student wants to do his housemanship in the UK, and maybe specialize before coming back. The problem is that since he is on a JPA scholarship, he is bonded to come back to work in Malaysia.
It's actually an old problem. Of course it is better to stay overseas and get your specialist degree. You get paid at least 3x more and work less hours than in Malaysia. More importantly you get opportunities to specialise in areas you are interested in. Most of my friends who stayed in Australia have very comfy lives now after working about 9 years. Here it's still tough with little savings and high costs of living for a normal doctoryou may get thrown into jail if you violate the PHFSA ruling of having your toilet doors open outwards in your clinic.
Even more ominous than that is the staggering beurocrasy of government service. Promotions and grants, training and postings. The mind boggles at the things that the big G tries to indoctrinate you with at their training camps and inductions. You don't belive me, you wait and see.
