General Practitioner Dispensing Rights to be Abolished?

Recently there was a sudden announcement in the NST that doctors practicing as GP's would lose their dispensing rights, followed by another announcement that it was not going to be implemented yet before more studies are done.
This seems to be inevitable in the next few years as the ministry of health will be planning a national health insurance scheme.
First the PHFSA then this. This is making it much harder for doctors to start practicing as GPs.
By right a doctor can charge from rm20 to rm35 per consultation, without medications. As it is, GP's charge from RM18 to RM30 for a consultation plus medications for a normal cough and flu.
Most of the cost is for the medications, and the discount comes from the consultation.
Anyway if you don't dispense medications, the consultation fees will have to be increased to about rm25 just to make ends meet. Then the patient will have to go to a pharmacy to get the medications, which would cost another rm15 to 20.
Fair enough as this would in fact be easier for GPs, as medications would not have to be dispensed, but those in rural areas would stand to lose out as there may not be any pharmacies around.
Anyway all this reeks of a money making deal by the big pharmacies, without any consultation with doctors. Just like the PHFSA which was buldozed through.
Doctors need to stand up and speak out stronger. Our voices are too small and our MMA is too weak.
