PENANG: A 7.2 magnitude earthquake, which hit off the northern Sumatra west coast, sent thousands of high-rise building dwellers scurrying for safety when the tremors were felt in many parts of Penang island on Wednesday.

The series of tremors, which occurred at 4.08pm, lasted for a few minutes could even be felt among those living in the low-rise buildings.

Among the buildings that were “rocked” by the quake were Komtar, Chinese Town Hall in Jalan Mesjid Kapitan Keling and condominiums and factories in Bayan Baru.

A state meteorological department spokesman said no tsunami alert was issued.

She said an earthquake was reported some 550km southwest of Bayan Lepas at about 4.08pm.
