Tylenol is the leading cause of liver failure

Acetaminophen/paracetamol (AKA Tylenol) is the leading cause of acute liver failure. The number of cases doubled between 1998 and 2003which I find interesting, because over the last several years, regular strength (325mg) Tylenol has been gradually disappearing in favor of the extra-strength (500mg) varieties.

Doc : Generally people think that Panadol is not dangerous, but taking more than 10 at once will destroy your liver...then it's a slow painful, jaundiced death.

Yeah, there's limitation to everything..
as long as don't exceed the maximal dose, then it's alright :)

The problem is Parasuicides, you know the "cry for help" they don't really want to kill themselves but want to show they need help. Unfortunately they commonly think Panadol is harmless and swallow 20 tabs...only to die slowly regretting it.

It really doesn't help when generic drug companies are producing Paracetamol in different shapes and colours (pink, yellow, white ad blue).

We have patients going doctors-shopping from one to another after their fever did not lower and have been overdose on paracetamol because each doctors prescribed different coloured tablets containing the same ingredients.

Is this the same problem in Malaysia?

Hehe Robin this is certainly the problem here in Malaysia. The elderly Makcik (auntie) will come to you and say I take the white pill, the red pill and the blue pill...throughly believing that you as a doctor should know what they are.
Even more interesting is when the patient requests for "KK".
"KK" are the words stamped on the generic paracetamol in the Governmen Hospitals.
For your information "KK" stands for Kementrian Kesihatan (Health Ministry) and is stamped on most of the generic drugs in the public hospital!
