MEDICAL INDEMNITY SCHEME FOR DOCTORS IN MALAYSIA

I just left the Government service to work as a GP and I have no idea about medical indemnity insurance. I'm trying to find out all I can about it and will share this useful info with you. Basically when you are in the government service, you are covered and the government will cover you for all the unforgivable mistakes you make. However once you leave, you have to cover yourself. From what I gather so far, in Malaysia there are 2 options. The Medical Protection Society or Malaysian Medical Indemnity.

An excerpt from the MMA site :
"The MMA requests all doctors to opt to Medical Protection Society (MPS) or Malaysian Medical Indemnity (MMI) for the medical indemnity scheme. For the last 30 years, MPS has been providing adequate cover and services. Similarly, MMI has been rendering protection for the last 19 years."

  • From what I see so far, the cost is about RM1500 per year for a GP, and up to RM$15000 for high risk specialties. Not cheap....but essential!
